Digital Literacy Programs

A big part of HealthSchema’s success in advancing public health are two often overlooked outcomes that are important to us:

  1. Closing the digital divide through enhancing digital literacy.

  2. Ensuring accessibility is a feature, following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) international standard.

In enhancing digital literacy, we have developed a curriculum to elevate skillsets to ensure an inclusive, equitable and multigenerational user experience.

We participate in the AmeriCorps Digital Navigation Program.

The Digital Navigation Program addresses digital inclusion, a critical social determinant of health impacting economic stability, healthcare, education, and community wellbeing. The program supports community members by improving access to connectivity, device ownership, and digital skills. We work one-on-one and in small groups to assess and enhance individuals' access to technology, create digital inclusion goals, and serve historically marginalized communities. This program aims at bridging the digital divide while empowering individuals with essential digital skills.

We offer a focused training curriculum to help senior citizens understand and avoid phishing scams

Many studies and reports conclude that human error is a major cause of data security breaches. They estimate that human error accounts for approximately 80-90% of data breaches globally. These errors include actions such as:

  1. Phishing attacks: Falling for fraudulent emails or messages designed to steal sensitive information.

  2. Mis-delivery: Sending sensitive data to the wrong recipient.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), senior citizens are more frequently targeted by phishing scams than other age groups because scammers often assume they have more disposable income or retirement savings.  Phishing scams cost senior citizens a reported $3.4 billion, with the average loss per victim exceeding $33,000.  Our course objectives are helping Senior Citizens:

  1. Understand what phishing is and its potential consequences.

  2. Identify common signs of phishing scams.

  3. Learn strategies to protect themselves from phishing attempts.

  4. Practice recognizing phishing scams through examples and hands-on activities.
